Bearing Inspection

We offer detailed inspections of prematurely failed or damaged ball and roller bearings. Identifying the underlying reason for failure is critical to prevent reocurrence. For an accurate assessment, we require either photographs or direct access to the bearing components, along with comprehensive information about the application and operating conditions. Where sufficient grease residues are available, we can also conduct a lubricant analysis to provide additional insights.
Depending on your needs, the analysis can include either a short summary or a detailed report. Both options feature high-quality images, insights into possible failure causes, and—where relevant—practical recommendations to help prevent future issues.

Choose the Right Level of Bearing Analysis

Remote Analysis

  • Our remote analysis is available in two formats: with a detailed inspection report or as a quick assessment without report.

  • We require images of the failed bearing components and detailed information about the application and operating conditions.

  • A report will usually cover 2 to 4 pages and include comments regarding possible failure modes and recommendations for preventive actions if appropriate.

  • Costs: £50 - £250 depending on complexity.

Detailed Inspection

  • For the analysis, we’ll need access to the bearing components. These can easily be sent to us by post, or for larger bearings, we can also carry out the inspection directly on site.

  • The report will usually cover more than 5 pages and include images, comments regarding possible failure modes & recommendations for preventive actions.

  • As we are not linked to any bearing manufacturer, our reports are unbiased and produced without prejudice.

  • Costs: £500 - £1000 depending on complexity.

Lubricant Analysis

  • Our own damage analyses show that a large share of premature bearing failures are directly or indirectly linked to the lubricant used.

  • It detects any presence of dirt, water, or chemical contaminants that accelerate wear and damage.

  • Detailed analysis can reveal whether the grease or oil has degraded (oxidation, viscosity changes, additive depletion) and lost its protective properties.

  • Costs: approx. £100 (e.g. basic wear-metal scan) - £500 (more detailed higher level checks).

Causes of bearing failure

Reasons for premature bearing failure

Flaking due to fatigue

Occurs when small pieces of bearing material are lifted and broken off the smooth surface of the raceway (often in the load zone) or the rolling elements. This flaking causes regions with a rough and coarse texture.
Possible cause: Excessive load/pre-load,
